What's new in Odoo 20 HR & Payroll

Fewer payroll surprises and much less HR data entry.

45 new features
9 apps covered
37 screenshots

Odoo 20 brings a wide set of changes to the people side of the business. Working schedules can now follow irregular patterns, time off can be counted in calendar days, attendance check-outs can close at a fixed hour, and Payroll has been reorganised around a monthly dashboard and guided pay runs. Recruitment makes better use of the talent pool, and Appraisals can collect feedback from people outside the company.

If you run a business, manage a team or look after HR and payroll, these changes are aimed at you. Many of them remove repeated data entry, add checks before mistakes reach payslips, and give managers a clearer picture of who is working, who is away and who is ready for the next role. Below we walk through the most useful updates app by app, with short notes on where to find them.

Chatter on pay runs

Payroll > Payslips > Pay Runs

In Odoo 20 each pay run has its own chatter. From the Pay Runs list, payroll officers open a side panel for a pay run to post internal notes, send messages, schedule activities and read the pay run's history, such as when it was created and how its status changed. The panel is reached from the chat icon on the pay run card, next to the employee count. This keeps discussion and follow-up about a pay run attached to the pay run itself.

Why it matters Helps payroll teams keep notes, messages, activities and history together on each pay run.

How to use it

  1. Go to Payroll > Payslips > Pay Runs.
  2. Hover a pay run card.
  3. Click the chat icon next to the employee count.

Contract date modification

Employees > Employee > Payroll tab

In Odoo 20, when a contract's start or end date is changed so that validated or paid payslips would fall outside the contract period, Odoo refuses to save the change. The warning shown includes a button that opens those payslips, which must be refunded, meaning corrected, before the new dates can be saved. This protects payroll history from becoming inconsistent with contract dates. The dates are edited on the Payroll tab of the employee form.

Why it matters Prevents contract date errors and helps identify payslips outside the new period for refund.

How to use it

  1. Go to Employees and open an employee with validated payslips.
  2. Open the Payroll tab.
  3. Change the contract date and save, choosing Correct terms.

Dashboard

Payroll > Dashboard

The Odoo 20 Payroll dashboard is laid out as a monthly timeline of warning cards. Setup cards point to configuration still to do, such as the pay schedule, payslip layout or benefits. Control cards flag data problems, such as employees without a bank account or a contract, and attendance issues. Every card has a button that opens the records needing attention, so payroll officers can move straight from a warning to fixing it.

Why it matters Helps payroll teams track monthly tasks and act on warnings directly from the dashboard.

How to use it

  1. Go to Payroll > Dashboard.
  2. Click a card's button to open the records to fix.

Employee type per company or branch

Payroll > Configuration > Contracts > Employee Types

In Odoo 20 employee types such as Employee, Student or Intern are stored as records with an optional Company field. When a company or branch is set on a type, the type can only be used in that company or branch. When the field is left empty, the type is shared by all companies. Multi-company groups use this to keep country- or entity-specific employee types separate while sharing common ones.

Why it matters Lets multi-company businesses limit employee types to a company or branch, or share them.

How to use it

  1. Go to Payroll > Configuration > Contracts > Employee Types.
  2. Open a type.
  3. Set its Company, or leave it empty to share it.

Net to gross simulation

Payroll > Employees > Salary Calculator

The Odoo 20 Gross-Net Salary Calculator accepts a salary entered as a net amount per month. Odoo then works out the gross wage, and the employer cost, that would result in that net pay, based on the chosen pay structure and working schedule. Payroll officers and HR use it to answer questions such as what gross salary is needed to pay a given net amount. The salary type is set to Net Per Month before entering the amount.

Why it matters Helps employers find the gross wage and employer cost needed to pay a desired net salary.

How to use it

  1. Go to Payroll > Employees > Salary Calculator.
  2. Set the salary type to Net Per Month.
  3. Enter an amount.

Pay run workflow

Payroll > Payslips > Pay Runs > New

Creating a pay run in Odoo 20 follows guided steps. Clicking New opens a dialog to choose employee types, the pay structure and the period. Continue leads to the selection of employees, and a Before You Start check then lists any pending issues before payslips are generated. Each pay run card shows its status and only the next relevant action, such as Validate, Pay or Mark as Paid, so payroll officers always know the following step.

Why it matters Guides payroll staff step by step through creating pay runs with a checklist before starting.

How to use it

  1. Go to Payroll > Payslips > Pay Runs > New.
  2. Choose employee types, structure and period.
  3. Click Continue and select employees.

Payslip sending options

Payroll > Configuration > Settings

Odoo 20 Payroll has a setting that controls when payslip PDFs are generated and emailed to employees. The choices are When Confirmed, When Paid, or Manually. With Manually selected, nothing is sent automatically and the pay run shows a Send by email button that the payroll officer clicks when ready. The setting is named Send payslips to employees and is found in the Payroll settings.

Why it matters Lets payroll teams choose whether payslips are emailed on confirmation, on payment, or manually.

How to use it

  1. Go to Payroll > Configuration > Settings.
  2. Find Send payslips to employees.

Payslip UX

Payroll > Payslips > Payslip > Salary Computation

The Salary Computation tab of an Odoo 20 payslip shows the lines that matter for that payslip. Obvious values, such as totals of empty categories, are greyed out, and columns with no values are hidden. A Show all toggle displays every line again when the full detail is needed. This makes payslips easier to review for payroll officers while keeping the complete computation available on demand.

Why it matters Helps payroll staff review payslips faster by showing only relevant salary lines.

How to use it

  1. Go to Payroll > Payslips.
  2. Open a payslip.
  3. Open the Salary Computation tab; use Show all if needed.

Salary indexation

Employees > Actions > Salary Increase

Odoo 20 has a Salary Increase action that can be run on one or several employees at once. It asks for an effective date, an increase rate, whether the rate applies to the full wage or to a capped wage, and an additional fixed amount. Odoo then creates new contract versions with the raised salaries and offers to correct payslips that are already affected by the change. HR uses it for yearly indexation or general raises.

Why it matters Lets HR apply salary increases to many contracts at once with dates, percentages and caps.

How to use it

  1. Go to Employees and select employees.
  2. Open Actions > Salary Increase.
  3. Enter date, rate, cap and fixed amount.

Salary rules

Payroll > Configuration > Salary > Rules

In Odoo 20 a salary rule has a Categories field and a Pay Structures field, and each accepts several values. One rule can therefore count towards several totals and be used by several pay structures, instead of being copied for each structure. This reduces the number of duplicated rules that payroll administrators have to maintain. Rules are managed from the Salary Rules menu in the Payroll configuration.

Why it matters Reduces duplicate setup by sharing one salary rule across several categories and pay structures.

How to use it

  1. Go to Payroll > Configuration > Salary > Rules.
  2. Open or create a rule.
  3. Set several Categories and Pay Structures.

Time entry exports

Employees > Actions > Export Time Entries

Odoo 20 offers a single Export Time Entries action on employees. It exports one month of time entries for the selected employees in one common file format, the same for every payroll provider. The action is used from the Employees list: select the employees, open Actions and choose Export Time Entries. The result covers the whole month for each selected employee in a standard layout.

Why it matters Lets payroll teams export a month of employee time entries in one standard-format action.

Work entries removal

Payroll > Configuration > Time Management > Time Types

In Odoo 20 there are no work entry records and no bridge between Planning and Payroll. Payslips read time off and working schedules directly. Work entry types and time off types are combined into one Time Type. Its form has a Time Off tab, covering approval and allocation, and a Payroll tab, both on the same record. Payroll administrators manage these types from the Time Management section of the Payroll configuration.

Why it matters Use Time Types instead of separate work entry and time off types; work entry records are gone.

Working schedules

Payroll > Configuration > Time Management > Working Schedules

In Odoo 20 a working schedule line can hold only a number of hours per day. The start and end times are left empty and the daily hours are entered instead, for example 7h30 on each day from Monday to Friday. This suits employees whose contract defines daily hours rather than fixed working times. Schedules are created or edited from the Working Schedules menu in the Time Management section of the Payroll configuration.

Why it matters Lets companies define working schedules by daily hours without specific start and end times.

How to use it

  1. Go to Payroll > Configuration > Time Management > Working Schedules.
  2. Open or create a schedule.
  3. Enter hours per day, leaving start and end empty.

Driver assignment

With the Belgian payroll localization in Odoo 20, the company car chosen in a salary package offer is applied to the vehicle in Fleet. When the employee signs the offer, they become the car's future driver, and once every party has signed they become its driver. The vehicle's driver in Fleet therefore follows the car selected for the employee. This requires the l10n_be_hr_contract_salary module and a salary package offer that includes a company car.

Why it matters Keeps Fleet driver records updated automatically when Belgian employees choose a car in their salary package.

How to use it

  1. Install the Belgian payroll localization.
  2. Send a salary package offer with a company car and have it signed.
  3. Check the car's driver in Fleet.

Test print pay runs

Payroll > Payslips > Pay Runs

A pay run in the Ready state in Odoo 20 offers a Test Print action. It produces draft PDF payslips for every employee in the pay run and attaches each PDF to the chatter of the matching payslip. Payroll officers can open these drafts and check the figures and layout before validating the pay run, without sending anything to employees. The action is found in the menu of a Ready pay run.

Why it matters Lets payroll teams review draft payslip PDFs before finalizing a pay run.

How to use it

  1. Go to Payroll > Payslips > Pay Runs.
  2. Open the menu of a Ready pay run.
  3. Choose Test Print.

Organisations use it to count or pay holiday work separately from normal days. The condition is in the Work Days section of a rule in the Attendances configuration.

Why it matters Lets businesses apply specific overtime rates and conditions on public holidays.

Payroll app > Employee contract > Company Car field

For Belgian companies using Odoo 20 Payroll, picking a new Company Car on an employee contract sets the employee as that car's Future Driver in Fleet, and clears the Future Driver of the previous car. The Driver field itself is not set automatically from payroll; the fleet officer confirms the change. The source could not verify that the current driver is replaced directly.

Why it matters Keeps car driver records current automatically when a company car is chosen for an employee in Payroll.

How to use it

  1. Open an employee contract in Payroll (Belgian company).
  2. Change Company Car.
  3. In Fleet, check the car's Future Driver.

Member entry management

Frontdesk > Stations

The Frontdesk Partnership module adds a Type to each frontdesk station: Guests or Members. A Members frontdesk admits contacts who scan their personal barcode, but only if they hold one of the partner grades, or membership tiers, chosen on the station. A passback timeout stops the same badge from being reused straight away. The module installs automatically with Partnership, and members check in through the station's kiosk.

Why it matters Helps venues admit only qualifying members through personal barcodes with passback protection.

How to use it

  1. Install Partnership; Frontdesk Partnership installs automatically.
  2. Go to Frontdesk > Stations, open a station, set Type to Members.
  3. Choose the allowed Grades, then click Open Kiosk.
