Odoo 20 or Odoo 19 — which should you choose?
Start new deployments on Odoo 20: there is no reason to begin on a version you will migrate off. For Odoo 19 users the decision turns on three things. First, finance: matching rules, bill line prediction, bank consistency and paying bills from Odoo turn month-end from matching lines into reviewing exceptions. Second, structure: groups with several companies on one database get inter-company routes, cross-company fulfilment and valuation that moves correctly. Third, licensing: the Light User tier re-prices staff who only touch a few screens, which can lower the bill for a mixed workforce. AI agents that run on triggers, MCP connections and offline mode add to the case. Against that, 19 has a year of production use, and Odoo 20 removes stored tracking values and changes the accounting structure, so custom modules and reports need testing. If none of the three pulls apply, staying on 19 until 20.1 is a defensible choice.

Who each is best for
Best for Odoo 20
New Odoo deployments from October 2026 onward. Odoo 19 users whose finance team spends month-end matching lines, groups running several companies on one database, businesses with many staff who only clock in, file expenses or use the shop floor (the Light User tier), US companies relying on Avalara, and teams ready to put AI agents on real, auditable workflows.
Best for Odoo 19
Odoo 19 deployments that are stable and where none of 20's changes is decisive. Risk-averse or regulated teams that wait for the first update release of any major version, and systems with heavy customisation built on stored tracking values or record rules that need time to rework. Odoo 19 stays inside Odoo's three-version support window.
Migration considerations
A 19 → 20 upgrade is a short hop: our published range is 4–8 weeks, most of it testing on a copy of your database. Check custom reports and modules that read stored tracking values, accounting customisations that rely on account groups or asset models, and security built on record rules, which 20 replaces with a domain on access rights. App Store modules need an Odoo 20 version from their vendor. Plan go-live after a month-end close, not before one.
Frequently asked questions
-
What is the biggest difference between Odoo 20 and Odoo 19?
For most mid-market companies, the accounting automation: matching rules, bill line prediction, bank consistency and paying bills from Odoo. For groups, the multi-company inventory flows. For cost, the new Light User licence. For AI, agents that run on triggers with an auditable chat, plus MCP connections to outside tools.
-
Should I upgrade from Odoo 19 to Odoo 20 now?
Upgrade now if month-end, multi-company stock or a mixed workforce that would move to Light User licences is decisive for you. If your 19 system is stable and none of these apply, waiting for the first update release is reasonable; 19 remains inside Odoo's three-version support window.
-
How long does an Odoo 19 to 20 upgrade take?
Our published range is 4–8 weeks for a short hop from 18 or 19. Most of that is your team testing the upgraded system on a copy before go-live.
-
Will my Odoo 19 customisations work on Odoo 20?
They need porting and testing like any major version. Check anything that reads stored tracking values, relies on account groups or asset models, or uses record rules for security; Odoo 20 changes all three. Third-party App Store modules need an Odoo 20 version from their vendor.
-
Is Odoo 20 more expensive than Odoo 19?
List prices changed with the release, and Odoo 20 adds a Light User licence at US$8.90 per user per month on Odoo's US price list. For a workforce where many people only use a few screens, the Light User split can lower the total. Odoo prices each country separately, so check yours.
-
Do Odoo 20 AI features cost extra?
Odoo's release notes state that all AI features now need credits, bought via In-App Purchase. The features are part of the product; usage is metered.
-
Should a new project start on Odoo 19 or 20?
On Odoo 20. Starting on 19 means planning an upgrade you could have avoided, and discovery and design run ahead of configuration anyway.
