The challenge
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) — based in the United States and a leader in commercial fusion-energy development — adopted Odoo in 2021 to manage critical operations as it scaled. By the time TechUltra was brought in, the user base had grown to 1000+ Odoo users spread across engineering, procurement, finance, manufacturing, and inventory teams. That scale exposed several issues:
- Legacy customizations from previous developers had accumulated as undocumented code, causing performance regressions and unpredictable behaviour after upgrades.
- Core modules needed optimization — Purchase, Accounting, Manufacturing, and Inventory were configured early when CFS was much smaller; they hadn’t kept pace with the company’s growth.
- Third-party integrations with banking platforms and external manufacturing software needed to flow accurate financial and production data into Odoo in real time.
- Real-time technical support mattered: CFS works to aggressive R&D timelines, and waiting overnight (8.5 hours behind India) for a fix to a blocking ERP issue wasn’t acceptable.
The team needed a development partner who could clean up the inherited code, optimise the four core modules, build the missing integrations, and provide same-day technical responses aligned to US business hours.
Our solution
TechUltra structured the engagement around four parallel workstreams, all delivered by senior consultants on a US-aligned schedule so issues raised during CFS’s working day get worked the same day.
Module optimization. We re-configured and tuned the four core modules — Purchase, Accounting, Manufacturing, Inventory — to match how CFS actually operates at 1000+ users. Workflow automation replaced manual approvals where they were holding things up; reports were rewritten to surface the metrics finance and ops leadership review weekly.
Third-party integrations. We built and stabilised integrations between Odoo and CFS’s external systems — banking platforms (for automated reconciliation) and manufacturing-floor software. The integrations now sync continuously, eliminating the daily manual export/import that was the prior workaround.
Legacy-code refactor. Inherited customizations from prior developers were audited, refactored where they could be salvaged, and replaced where they couldn’t. Each customization is now documented so future developers (whether ours or CFS’s) have a clear hand-over.
Real-time, US-timezone support. TechUltra dedicated a senior team working US business hours. Critical-path issues now have an average first-response time of < 30 minutes during the US working day, not the next morning.
The results
Operational efficiency across departments. With Purchase, Accounting, Manufacturing, and Inventory tuned for the actual user base, the day-to-day friction CFS’s teams used to absorb is largely gone. The ERP now keeps up with the organisation rather than slowing it down.
Seamless third-party data flow. Banking + manufacturing integrations run continuously. Finance closes the books faster; production planning reflects real-time inventory rather than yesterday’s snapshot.
Stable system at 1000+ users and growing. Performance regressions from the legacy code-base are resolved. The platform is in shape to scale as CFS continues to add users without rebuilding the foundation.
Real-time support that fits CFS’s schedule. US-aligned working hours means blocking issues get resolved during the working day, not overnight. This single change measurably increased user trust in the system — there is now an internal expectation that ERP issues get fixed before standup the next morning.
The engagement is ongoing — TechUltra continues as CFS’s Odoo Support and Odoo Development partner, working across major Odoo upgrades as CFS’s product roadmap evolves.
“TechUltra aligned with our US working hours and took ownership of legacy customizations our previous developers had left undocumented. They unblocked our production-side teams within weeks.”
